We expect a lot from modern compact crossover SUVs these days, and we expect even more of luxury models. That's especially the case when the model in question carries a Mercedes-Benz badge. You'll find few more stylish and desirable luxury compact crossovers out there than the sensational 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC.
2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC
The 2018 GLC is split into five different models, and they consist of three versions of the GLC Sedan and two GLC Coupe models. The entry point to the GLC family is the GLC 300 SUV, followed by the GLC 300 4MATIC® SUV and the AMG® GLC 43 SUV. Then we move on to the Coupe models, which are the standard GLC 300 4MATIC® Coupe and the sensational AMG® GLC 43 Coupe. You'll now find two different flavors of GLC, a conventional crossover and what Mercedes calls a "coupe." If we're being honest, the coupe is really a crossover with some of the utility removed in favor of an extremely alluring sloping roofline. The coupe is certainly very stylish, but whether you're willing to accept the consequential compromise of rear head room is entirely up to you.
From a distance, the GLC looks like about 95 percent of it was 3-D-printed from a very similar but bigger GLE. That's not a criticism, as the GLC's design is part of the German automaker's efforts to harmonize the design of similar vehicles. Mercedes makes things really easy for buyers, as engines in the GLC family are model specific, which means you won't have to decide if you want to pay extra for a different engine at a certain trim level.
With the GLC, the engine is the main building block for the entire model. Since the GLC is a thoroughly modern luxury compact crossover SUV, it makes sense that the smallest engine offered is an efficient, turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four that develops a healthy 241 horsepower and gets the GLC 300 models to 60 mph in less than six and a half seconds.
The transmission is a 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic, and this combination helps to deliver an impressive 28 mpg highway fuel economy rating. The GLC 300 4MATIC® SUV utilizes exactly the same powertrain, but it also features the 4MATIC® permanent all-wheel drive system that is always engaged and optimizes torque to every wheel. The exterior design may be an acquired taste for some, but nobody could take exception to what they find inside the GLC--the cabin is nothing short of stunning. As well as all the comfort and quality we expect from a Mercedes interior, it's also graceful, flowing, and flamboyant, all at the same time. Beautifully rounded contours are matched by a horizontal orientation overall and punctuated by just the right amount of bright work, matte-metallic trim, and nicely detailed round vents now appearing throughout the Mercedes family.
