2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class AMG in the dark

The E-Class sedan was an all-new generation for the 2017 model year, but it's taking until the 2018 model year for the other body styles to catch up. Right here though, we're going to look exclusively at the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class AMG® models, the top-tier version of the classic E-Class model.

2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class AMG®

Mercedes-Benz is offering two AMG® versions of the 2018 E-Class Sedan: the AMG® E 43 and the AMG® E 63 S. On top of that, you'll also have the option of the all-new AMG® E 63 S Wagon, which concludes the E-Class AMG® family.

When the new E-Class started appearing last year in sedan form, the German automaker could quite easily have backed away from dramatic styling changes, since it was already a stunning design. It hasn't though. Instead Mercedes-Benz has embraced the long-nose, short-deck sweep that's made the C-Class and S-Class the most stylish cars in their respective classes. AMG® models obviously have the sporty style of grille with the three-pointed star embedded rather than having it mounted on the hood as we see with regular versions of the E-Class. AMG® models don't go overboard with styling appointments that shout too loudly about their performance credentials, but you'll also notice a number of subtle giveaway signs such as aggressive AMG® bodywork appointments, exclusive 20-inch wheels, and Ceramic Composite brakes.

It simply wouldn't be right to present a car as special as an E-Class AMG® that had an interior the same as a non-AMG® model, even though they're still very special luxury interiors. Inside the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class AMG® models, you'll find exclusive appointments everywhere you look that make an AMG® cabin even more enthralling than others in the range. Incredibly supportive seats are hand-fitted in supple upholstery, while available options range from red seat belts to shell-style AMG® Performance seats. You can choose between eight different available materials for trimming the wavelike dash and doors of the E-Class AMG®, which include the likes of carbon fiber or an intriguing woven metal. Looking like an AMG® is one thing, but these cars have to perform the right way to live up to that auspicious name too. The 2018 E-Class AMG®s certainly do.

2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class AMG driving on the highway

The AMG® E 43 Sedan comes with an AMG®-enhanced 3.0-liter V-6 bi-turbo, which develops 396 horsepower and gets the car from a standing start to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. The transmission used is a spectacular AMG®-enhanced 9G-TRONIC nine-speed, which helps the E 43 to a highway fuel economy rating of 25 mpg. If that's not quite special enough for you, the E 63 S rocks a 4.0-liter V8 bi-turbo, which ups the power ante to a remarkable 603 horsepower and gets you to 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds.

This time the transmission is an AMG® SPEEDSHIFT® MCT nine-speed. While fuel economy ratings are not yet forthcoming, we're thinking that anyone buying an E63 S would be less interested in the numbers on the highway than the performance under the hood. The E 63 S Wagon shares the same powertrain as the E 63 S Sedan.

E-Class AMG® Premium 3 Package

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class AMG® is already a top-of-the-line luxury vehicle, but the Premium 3 package offers another level of active safety features and driver-focused convenience. This package comes with congestion braking, easing your experience in traffic, as well as active blind spot, steering, lane change, lane keeping, speed limit, and brake assistance. One impressive feature is the Air Balance cabin fragrance and purification system, which not only keeps your E-Class from absorbing the classic "lived-in" odors of daily commutes, but also keeps the air that you're breathing as clean as possible--a huge bonus for those who frequent polluted highways and cityscapes.

Conclusion

It's hard to imagine a Mercedes-Benz doing more than what it already does to create a luxury driving experience, but the 2018 E-Class AMG® series does just that. Incredible performance combines with total interior luxury to create a vehicle that gives you nearly anything you could imagine, all with the reputation and prestige of the Mercedes-Benz nameplate standing behind them.
